PROBLEM: A vulnerability in the Java Plug-in.

- Linux SDK and JRE 1.4.2_05 and earlier, all 1.4.1 and 1.4.0 releases, and 1.3.1_12 and earlier.
- HP-UX B.11.00, B.11.11, B.11.22, B.11.23
- Symantec Gateway Security 5400 Series v.2.0.1 and v.2.0
- Symantec Enterprise Firewall v8.0
- Releases prior to Java 1.4.2 on Mac OS X
- Java Web Start on Java 5.0.0 release only on HP-UX
DAMAGE: May allow an untrusted applet to escalate privileges, including reading and writing files with the privileges of the user running the applet.
SOLUTION: Upgrade to the appropriate version.

The risk is MEDIUM. A malicious attacker can compromise a user's system.

1. Impact A vulnerability in the Java Plug-in may allow an untrusted applet to 
escalate privileges, through JavaScript calling into Java code, including reading 
and writing files with the privileges of the user running the applet.

and iDEFENSE Inc. for coordinating the release of this issue.

2. Contributing Factors This issue can occur in the following releases: 

SDK and JRE 1.4.2_05 and earlier, all 1.4.1 and 1.4.0 releases, and 1.3.1_12 and earlier

Note: JDK and JRE 5.0 are not affected by this issue.
